The F-Type is a Jaguar sports car through and through, with its fantastic performance, excellent agility on the road and awesome design. This year the F-Type range is expanding, the all-wheel drive and manual transmission options taking the model choices from six to fourteen.
An unbelievable ride, the F-Type represents the best in luxury sports cars from the manufacturer that knows sports cars better than any. The F-Type is also a mature option, with refinement and class that other brands just can’t touch. Get in touch for a test drive today, or read on to discover the many improvements in the 2016 Jaguar F-Type.
The 2016 Jaguar F-Type offers the class, luxury and style of a two-traveler sports car. You can get the F-Type as a fabric-top roadster convertible with a power roof or a coupe variety with a panoramic sunroof. Both are available in base, S and R trims.
The base trim (from $65,000) has as standard a sport exhaust and manual transmission, but an automatic transmission as an option. Base F-Types with an automatic transmission don’t get the sport exhaust as standard but can add it as an option.
Some of the F-Type models’ extensive shared features include keyless entry and ignition, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, power-folding heated side-mirrors, cruise control, power tilt-and-telescoping steering column, memory settings for the driver, an 8-inch touchscreen display, auto-dimming rearview mirror and single-zone automatic climate control.
The interior includes leather and simulated suede upholstery on eight-way power seats matching the simulated leather trim. Automatic bi-xenon headlights with washers, as well as LED running lights will make your ride shine through the night. The 12-speaker Meridian sound system integrates Bluetooth phone and audio, smartphone app integration, CD player, HD and satellite radio, USB/iPod interface and auxiliary audio jack.
The $77,300 S trim provides a supped-up engine (see below), better front brakes, 19-inch wheels, a flat-bottom heated steering wheel, user-selectable driving modes that controls the response of the steering, throttle and transmission, an active sport exhaust, adaptive suspension, a mechanical limited-slip differential, and multicolor ambient lighting.
The R trim provides the maximum upgrades to the F-Type base, including 20-inch wheels, a supercharged V8 engine, torque vectoring electronic active differential, rear parking sensors, automatic dimming mirrors, heated seats, full leather interior (upholstery and trim), metal pedals, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, quad exhausts, red brake calipers, and larger rear brakes. For the convertible, the R trim adds a wind deflector, while for the coupe this top trim adds a power hatch.
Most options are available as add-ons to the base trim levels, and all trims have the option of leather or simulated suede interiors, simulated suede upholstery and interior trim, heated windshields, and the Vision pack (adaptive headlights, parking sensors, rear traffic detection, blind-spot alert system, rearview camera, and automatic high-beams). High performance brakes can be added to all but the base model, and a carbon-fiber roof can be substituted on all coupes.
Powertrain and Performance
The F-Type’s performance has topped the charts since 2014, but in 2016, there’s a new exciting all-wheel drive variant. There are also some new manual transmission options that overall increase the capabilities of the F-Types range.
Three different engine models are offered in the 2016 Jaguar F series: two special V6s and an extremely strong V8. All of the three engine variants feature a supercharger.
The F-Type (base model) features a 340 horsepower 3.0 liter supercharged V6 engine. Next in line is the F-type S, which is a 380 horsepower version of the F-Type. At the highest end is the F-Type R that sports a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine with 550 horsepower. It can go from zero to 60 mpg in 3.9 seconds.
All three engine options are available in all the F-Type’s coupe and convertible form factors, but only the F-Type S and the F-Type R can be equipped with all-wheel drive. For a manual transmission, pick from the F-Type and F-Type S V6 engines with rear wheel drive.
The standards transmission is an eight speed automatic with a quick-shifting paddle-shifted manual mode for a more sporty drive.
As with most sports cars, the enjoyment one gets from the vehicle increases in line with the horsepower under the hood. In particular, the larger V8 engine produces enough sound to wake an entire city block while keeping that signature sexy revving sound intact. However, the smaller V6s are more nimble and feel slightly sportier in the way they drive.
The base form of the coupe handles slightly better than the convertible, which is par for the course and is expected due to the more rigid platform that the coupe gets. With adaptive dampeners installed, the convertible handles great, but the coupe still slightly holds the edge.
The F-Type Jaguar is an immensely fun drive with good economy for a sports car. The entry-level engine in both the coupe and convertible models rates at 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. The F-type S rates slightly below, as expected, with 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, the F-type S rates slightly lower, with 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined.
The F-type R drops below the two V6 engines with the rear drive convertible scoring 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined, and the all-wheel variant is rated at 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. Finally, we have the V8 F-Type R coupe scoring 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined.
The F-Type is simply stunning, with more crisp short lines than the XK grand tourer; this car has the look of the original E-Type while still original and modern.
The front end is tall, with LED lamps giving the nose a sharp appearance and the round tail lamps adding a touch of vintage cool. All the lines have a great organic flow for a car that’s very streamlined and eye catching.
You won’t find door handles on the F-Type! They sit inset and only come out when press physically or through use of the key fob – a very modern feature.
Make no mistake about it – the 2016 Jaguar F-Type is as pure as a sports car can get. It makes few compromises for trunk space or rear seats. This Jaguar is made for the enthusiast.
In comparison, the 911 tries to to be practical with its tiny backseats that look more like baby car seats than actually car seats, and even the Corvette tries to cram in a lot of hatch space. The F-Type doesn’t care about that. It’s not a car for everyday use. It’s made for the weekend, the best days, the days made just for you.
The F-Type is built solidly, providing a comfortable ride and quiet cabin in both hard and soft top varieties, with the high-end fit and finish you’ve come to expect from a Jaguar.
The interior is very much a typical luxury sports car, functional and decked out in leather; no wood panels inside this cherry; all modern, sleek and wonderful.
The comfortable, supportive seats are highly adjustable, allowing the tallest of us to fit in this beast of a machine.
The 2016 Jaguar F-Type comes with many top of the line and innovative safety features, ensuring you of not only a comfortable and stylish ride, but a safe one as well.
All cars come standard with airbags, stability and traction control, and for convertibles, roll over protection.
The InControl Touch system connects through your smartphone with a simple app, which allows for direct connection to emergency services in the event of an accident, being able to call for roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown, and more. Along with these features for your peace of mind, the InControl Touch also included a 3D mapping system, large 8-inch touch screen, remote start capability, and is compatible with both Android and Apple (IOS) phones.
There are also package options that can include adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rearview camera, keyless entry, as well as interior luxuries like heated seats, leather interior, accent trim color choice.
The 2016 Jaguar F-Type is badass. Its sharp handling and beautiful styling make it a performance car that turns heads everywhere. The design is all at the same time futuristic, contemporary and vintage, and you’ll die for that engine note that announces its arrival.
Many buy the F-Type for the glamour alone, but it’s also a serious performance vehicle that’s tuned to perfection. The 550-hp V8 of the F-Type R brings it into supercar territory and the shifter on all F-Types is sublime. The clutch and steering are wonderfully light, and the cabin appointments are modern, showing that Jaguar has forever left behind the image of stuffy wood and wool interiors. This has been a conscious effort of Jaguar’s chief designer, who has brought the F-Type in the 21st century.
The 2016 Jaguar F-Type is an incredible vehicle by any standard, and we’re proud to have the latest Jaguar F-Type in our showroom for your perusal.
