This year, Jaguar has gone in a new direction with its flagship XJ sedan. The British company’s 2016 offering has an aluminum body and underlying structure that renders the vehicle nimble and lightweight. This in conjunction with the powerful engine options makes the 2016 Jaguar XJ feel much sportier.
Among the myriad of features the vehicle offers are its InControl Infotainment System, full adaptive LED headlights and brand new electric power steering available in rear-drive models.
The 2016 model is similar to the 2015 model in terms of exterior styling, but it now has a more upright and larger grille with a new wire mesh pattern. The XJ still maintains its luxurious sensibilities with the latest model. With the 2016 XJ, Jaguar has taken what was worked so well and somehow made it even better.
The new 2016 Jaguar XJ comes in both a five-passenger model and a four-passenger configuration. This full sized luxury sedan is available in both the regular XJ model, and the XJL, which is a long wheelbase variant. The regular XJ comes in a few different models including the R-Sport, Supercharged and XJR, while the XJL model offers the Portfolio, Supercharged, and XJR trims. Jaguar has really made sure there is a body style offered for every possible driver.
R-Sport (XJ only)
The R-Sport is the base model and it comes standard with a supercharged V6, an adaptive and self-leveling suspension system, keyless entry and ignition, adjustable steering and throttle, shift paddles, parking sensors in both the front and rear, automatic windshield wipers, 19-inch wheels, automatic and adaptive headlights that include automatic high beams, a panoramic sunroof, leather interior, and a rear view camera as an extra safety feature.
Soft close doors, dual climate control, heated and cooled eight way power seats, driver memory settings, a power tilt and telescope steering wheel, and heated and cooled rear seats are also some of the great features of the base XJ.
There’s a sound system including an eight-inch touchscreen system with multimedia features, 14-speaker Meridian audio system that includes a CD player, and all this is augmented with a Wi-Fi hotspot, standard navigation system, satellite radio, HD radio, and a digital music storage system that offers a USB connection.
The Comfort package that comes optional with the R-Sport includes 14-way power seats with massage functions, passenger seat memory and climate control, and upgraded upholstery in leather.
Included in the optional Parking Assist Package are surround view cameras and automatic parking. There are also some standalone features like cruise control, upgraded stereo system, additional illumination and lighting in the cabin, a wood and leather steering wheel, and a heated windshield for those interested in having the best of the best.
Portfolio (XJL only)
The Portfolio comes as a choice exclusively in the long wheel base XJR model. The model comes with unique added exterior trim, four-zone climate control, 14-way seats, LED reading lights in the rear, electric rear window sunscreen, and manual rear side window screens. While the options list is similar to the R-Sport, it includes the addition of the Premium Rear Seat Package with two reclining rear seats, winged headrests – front and rear, automatic side rear window screens, a rear entertainment center and fold down tray tables. All of these standard and optional features make the Portfolio an exceptional driving experience.
Supercharged (XJ & XJL)
All of the Portfolio features come in the Supercharged model of both XJ and XJL versions. In addition to the Portfolio features specified above, the Supercharged model includes a supercharged V8, active rear differential, 20-inch wheels and performance tires with larger brakes.
XJR (XJ & XJL)
The XJR is the top of the line when it comes to the 2016 Jaguar XJ. It comes in both XJ and XJL versions, and includes the most potent V8, exclusive 20-inch wheels, XJR specific tuning suspension, active exhaust, sports seats, heated steering, and unique interior trim and features. There is an additional optional Premium Rear Seat Package.
The 2016 Jaguar offers all-wheel drive with the base engine to appeal to buyers in harsher climes. The XJ’s powertrain options are carried over from the 2015 model, which proved to be very capable in every way, from power to fuel efficiency.
The XJ base model weighs in at 420 pounds, which is several hundred pounds less the main sedans of other brands. The XJ’s lighter curb weight plays the biggest role in its handling on the road. Jaguar uses riveted-and-bonded aluminum body panels and all-aluminum structures to make the XJ amazingly light for a car of its size.
A 340-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine comes with the Jaguar XJ base model. It goes from zero-60 in 5.7 seconds. This makes it nearly as fast as the V8 XJ. It also gets a respectable 27 MPG on the highway, according to the EPA. You can get a standard or long wheelbase, and all-wheel drive is an option.
If you want to go one better, you have a choice between two supercharged, 5.0-liter V8 engines. Option 1 is the supercharged XJ, which has 470 horsepower. The second option is the XJR, which has 550 horsepower. You can get either the short or the extended wheelbase on both models. The XJR goes from 0-60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. It also has an upgraded interior, stiffer suspension and various exterior aerodynamic additions.
All of the XJ models come with an eight-speed ZF automatic. The ZF unit shifts quickly and smoothly. It has a Dynamic mode, which give you sharper shifts, and an S mode that is performance-oriented.
The rearward torque bias of the all-wheel drive system is geared toward inclement weather, not performance. When driving in Winter mode, a 30% minimum torque is sent to the front wheels, with as much as 50% possible.
Ride and handling is smoother than its competitors thanks to its state of the art electronics. You can use the “JaguarDrive Control” to move between Normal, Dynamic and Winter settings. This will affect the throttle, ride quality, transmission and steering.
Even though there are fewer performance modes compared to its rivals, this is really a benefit on the Jag. The XJ has a more familiar and pure feel to it. It also has more of an athletic feel than prior XJs. Due to its lighter weight it handles better than most comparable vehicles. The extra-special pedal feel and big ventilated disc brakes makes the XJ a joy to drive.
Electric powered steering is now used in the rear-drive XJ sedans.
The redesigned 2015 Jaguar XJ proved Jaguar’s commitment to innovative and modern design with a sleek new offering. Dispensing with the classic Jaguar style of rounded headlights and a broad oval front grille, the XJ boasts a sleek and futuristic looking design that is accentuated by its all-aluminum body. On this striking new model, the redesign includes sporty glossy black panels that hide the C-Pillars, and give the impression that the rear windshield extends fully from one fender to the other. The overall effect is characteristic of Jaguar’s long tradition of elegant design and functionality. The front end is highlighted with an eye catching broad wire-mesh grille and accentuated by the sporty rhomboid-shaped headlights. This stylish and original car blends futuristic design and function effortlessly with a style that harkens back to classic French design.
Prepare to be amazed by the interior of the 2016 Jaguar XJ. If you like glamour and chrome, then you are going to feel right at home while driving this vehicle. The vehicle has all sorts of shimmer thanks to a large glass sunroof. This allows sunlight to highlight the chrome finishing and draw further attention to the piano-black trim decorating the center dash. Furthermore, the doors are fitted with wood and a fantastic leather headliner. Options are available for different tastes, including several striped-wood veneers. This makes the XJ’s luxurious environment unparalleled to competitors.
The rear seats are no exception either. Unlike some German cars that focus on a luxurious front seat finish alone, the rear seats are as beautifully finished as the rest of the car.
There is no shortage of innovation in the XJ’s advanced interfaces. An HD LCD screen displays the normal functions you use daily. What’s cool is that the center screen changes colors ever so subtly depending on which drive mode is selected. For instance, the performance drive mode produces a soft red when initiated. Additionally, reel dials are now a thing of the past, as all gauges and secondary controls are toggled on the main LCD screen.
Rear-seat entertainment is available on some XJ models. These entertainment systems provide 10.2-inch HD screens with two USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI connection, allowing passengers to connect virtually any device.
Passengers riding in the front will be riding on multi-adjustable seats. Let’s not forget however, that all seats in every XJ model are heated and ventilated. Front seats have the option to be upgraded to massaging seats!
Space is of no concern, as the trunk contains 18.4 cubic feet of space and a finished flat floor. This is all available via the power trunk lid.
The new XJ is equipped with a rear view camera that will help you see areas that are generally blocked from view. With the blind-spot system, you will be advised if you are coming near to cars in other lanes. There is also the option to have adaptive cruise control and headlights on this vehicle as well.
You will be safe in bad weather with this car’s all-wheel-drive ability. The front to rear torque has a bias of 10:90, and in Winter mode it switches to 30:70; and can even automatically switch to 50 percent of the torque if it’s needed in the front.
A sublime ride that is as close to perfection in a large sedan as we can ever expect, the Jaguar XJ is a timeless classic. We invite you to arrange a test drive to experience the incredible 2016 Jaguar XJ for yourself.
