The 2016 Porsche Macan was a favorite of the press and consumers alike, thanks to its excellence performance worthy of the Porsche name, all wrapped up in a luxury compact crossover body with enough room for five comfortable passengers. Borrowing the excellent 7-speed PDK transmission from the Boxster, some dashes of styling from the 911 and sporting a powerful V6 engine, the Macan is the best of all things Porsche for many consumers.
In addition to the exciting new Porsche Macan GTS that was presented at the 2015 Auto Show Tokyo, Porsche has outfitted the new 2017 Macan range with a state-of-the-art entertainment and navigation system, as well as updated a wide range of features that enhance the driving experience and passenger comfort.
2017 Macan S
From $54,400, the Macan S features a 3.0L V6 engine capable of throwing out 340 horsepower and 339 pounds feet of torque. Even this base model can get from zero to sixty in 5 seconds flat (when equipped with the Sports Chrono Package.) As standard it comes with ABS, torque control, automatic brake differential, Porsche Stability Management and Trailer Stability Management. The Macan S will get 17 miles to the gallon in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.
The 19” wheels are complemented by privacy glass, aluminum window trims and a front fascia with integrated air intakes.
Inside, you can enjoy 8-way power from seats with driver seat memory, partial leather and Alcantara trimmed front and rear seats, paddle-shifting sports steering wheel, high resolution TFT instrument cluster, two-zone climate control, power windows and tailgate, heated power side mirrors, four 12-volt outlets, an 11-speaker 225-watt audio system with 7-inch display and a HomeLink-compatible transmitter.
2017 Macan GTS
New for 2017 is the Macan GTS at a base price of $67,200, and it’s where a lot of eyes are most keenly focused. Still rocking the same engine as the Macan S, Porsche have been able to squeeze an additional 20 horsepower and 20 pounds of torque out of it, thanks chiefly to technical wizardry. The GTS also sits lower than the Turbo and features its own darker theme both in the exterior and interior. Its 20” black wheels and dark quadruple-exhaust tips make a statement, and it comes standard with adaptive air suspension.
We’ll have to wait on exact details of what comes as standard in the Macan GTS, as full details have not yet been released, but it looks to be a scorcher.
2017 Macan Turbo
The top of the range Macan Turbo starts at $76,000, and it’s where enthusiasts should look when requiring a luxury compact crossover with sports car performance. With 400 horsepower and 406 pounds feet of torque, the Turbo can top 164 mph and get you to sixty from a standstill in 4.4 seconds (with the Sports Chrono Package). It comes standard with Porsche Active Management Suspension.
You’ll clock the Macan Turbo from afar thanks to its sporty red brake calipers, custom Macan Turbo front LED lights and Macan Turbo 18” wheels. You may also notice the larger air intakes and Macan Turbo design tailpipes. The Macan Turbo offers the Porsche Dynamic Light System (see below) as standard. Inside, the Turbo has adaptive 18-way adjustable driver-memory heated sport seats, a brushed aluminum and smooth leather finish and 14-way power seats throughout the vehicle.
It should be noted that all 2017 Macans feature a wealth of options from which one can pick and choose to one’s heart content. From performance upgrades like air suspension and advanced torque vectoring to specific choices of seat belt colors (Agate Grey is particularly fetching), choosing a Porsche Macan means you can set up your driving experience exactly as you dream.
New exterior paint colors are available for all versions of the Macan.
For the first time the Macan is offered with full-LED headlights in conjunction with the optional adaptive light system Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus). These new headlights help the driver through the projection of a beam that simulates daylight, enhancing the scope of the beam while using less energy. The Macan is also equipped with daytime running lights that shine with the brand’s typical four-point design. Moreover, this dynamic style is underlined by the contrast between dark inserts in the housing and four anodized silver LED. The flashy chrome trim directs the light around a three-dimensional projector creating an amazing adaptive lighting effect. Instead of the projection lenses surrounding the bi-xenon headlamps and auxiliary lamps, the LED version has a module in the center with additional lights which provide support to the main beam.
Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus
PDLS Plus’s dynamic high beams automatically adjust based on a camera installed in the windshield. Automatically adjusting the reach of the light beam while driving at night with oncoming traffic allows the use of the maximum lighting potential without blinding other drivers.
New Macan Turbo Exterior Package
Inspired by the new GTS model, Porsche offers additional packages for the interior and exterior of the Macan Turbo. A variety of design elements for the body give this powerful SUV an edgier and sportier look. The 2017 Macan Turbo exterior package includes 21-inch wheels which come in an exclusive two-tone color. The vehicle also incorporates stylized side mirrors, the Porsche logo in color in the center of its wheels and a set of marks in high-gloss black decorate the air intakes, side profiles, moldings, side windows and the lower rear body panel.
The custom Turbo sports exhaust system is composed of an array of black piping that blends harmoniously with the body. Together with the black taillights, these complete the exclusive appearance of the most sophisticated version of the Macan.
Comfort lighting, which was previously only available as a separate package, is now standard across the Macan range.
New Macan Turbo Interior Package
In keeping with the GTS custom Alacantra and leather trim with contrast stitching, the Turbo interior package will delight sporty drivers, thanks to its excellent aesthetic finish. Alcantara, an oft-used material in racing, covers the central area of the seats, the armrests, center console and door panels, with stitching in Rhodium Silver or Maroon for a contrasting effect. The head restraints bear the letters Turbo in contrasting colors and the door entry guards have an illuminated model logo.
New generation Porsche Communication Management
The new Porsche Communication Management system (PCM), which premiered recently with the Porsche 911, is now the infotainment center of the2017 Porsche Macan.
The most notable improvements include access to real-time information on the status of the programmed route, which simplifies navigation. Porsche has added a Wi-Fi access point feature.
The central component of the entertainment system is the new seven-inch high resolution screen with a redesigned interface that lets the user navigate in an intuitive multi-touch way, similar to a smart phone interface. It is standard on all models. The various connection options for Bluetooth, CDs, DVDs, USB, iPods and SD cards allow playback of media and the storage of content in the PCM.
In order to further expand the vehicle’s connectivity, Porsche has developed the Connect Plus module which provides online real-time traffic information and is equipped with Google services that complement the driving dynamics of the Macan, making it easy to reach the desired destination faster. Your use of the PCM as a Wi-Fi access point and the further integration of smart phones fulfill the highest aspirations in terms of connectivity.
Despite its powerful engine the 2017 Macan is one of the safest vehicles on the road with a wealth of active and passive safety features. The 2017 Porsche Macan takes this even further, and now has parking assistance with a front and rear camera as standard across the range, along with a lane departure warning system. These go along with advanced front, side, rear, curtain and knee airbags, active all-wheel traction management, automatic tire pressure monitoring and adaptive brake and headlights. And as you are stepping into a Porsche, you also know that the braking system is world-class.
The 2017 Porsche Macan is proof that is possible to endow the performance of a sports car into a small crossover capable of seating five passengers in luxury. It’s the fastest option in its class, and the drive blows away everything else one could consider a competitor. With the Macan S, Macan GTS and particularly the Macan Turbo you’ll not just be pulling ahead of all other crossovers, you’ll be rivaling the acceleration of high performance sedans. There’s just nothing else out there like the 2017 Porsche Macan, so get in line for your next luxury compact crossover today.
